Does your cars Axle need to be repaired? 4 Ways To Tell

It’s a fact that you won’t be able to drive very far if you have a damaged drive axle. Your cars Axles transfer power from the transmission to the wheels when they are turning, so if they stop working, you have problems.

You may not know the extent of their importance, they bear the entire weight of the vehicle all its riders and everything inside. No doubt axles are a really strong piece of equipment but if you overload that car or truck, hit a nasty pothole or hit something they can crack and break causing you a lot of problems.

Most times you can feel something but may not recognize that’s your problem, just in case, here are four ways to tell you will need to have your Axles inspected at Moe’s Northboro Auto Service Center.

Not so Good Vibrations
If you’ve had a recent encounter with a pothole, the cringe-worthy kind, hit a curb accidentally or been involved in a collision you might hear something that sounds like a rumble or a wobbling. This may be accompanied by a strange feeling in your tires, difficulty steering and other unfamiliar conditions that were not there beforehand.

If your tires don’t seem quite right, you find you’re having difficulty steering, there are fluctuations when you turn, drive slow speeds or accelerate that’s a good indication you have a damaged Axle which can cause dangerous driving.

Clicking and Clunking
If you notice clicking sounds when you put your car in gear and it’s struggling to move that’s an indication there may be axle-joint damage. What your car is trying to tell you is that your transmission can’t deliver enough power to the wheels due to problems with the joints. This is why it’s so important to get this checked immediately because it could also mean your transmission is failing.

Leaky Greasy

If you notice leaking grease underneath your car or on the inside edge of your tire that can mean a leaking axle boot or CV boot. That’s the rubber cover over the drive axle joint otherwise known as the CV joint.

Leaking axle boots don’t mean that the axle has been damaged but if there’s not enough grease because of a leak there will be problems. Dirt can enter through a broken cover and cause failure, so it’s imperative to have your car inspected at Moe’s if you even experience ONE of these issues.

Not getting anywhere
If your car starts up fine, goes into gear but doesn’t move then you can assume there is a problem with the universal joint. Even if you continue to press down on the gas, you will only hear the engine but you won’t be moving and that is a classic symptom of Axle damage. At this point you will have no choice but to have it repaired.

This is not really up for any discussion, they are critical for every part of your cars performance and vehicle safety. The engine, brakes steering system, and tires rely on this so if an axle is damaged, your first call is to Moe’s Northboro Auto Service Center at (508) 393-3225.
